Bloxham Village.
Bloxham is a pretty village situated three miles southwest of the market town of Banbury. It nestles in the North Oxfordshire countryside, bordering the Cotswolds, and is about 8 miles from Chipping Norton and 25 miles north of the historic university city of Oxford.
Within the village there is a supermarket and several small shops, one of which contains the local post office. It has three schools including a primary, secondary and a mixed boarding school.
The old part of Bloxham village has many winding lanes and has been designated as a conservation area.
Bloxham Parish Council.
The Parish Council comprises eleven councillors elected by the village (or elected/co-opted in the case of a casual vacancy). The current electorate for the village is 2382. Currently all 11 councillors have been elected, from whom one is elected as ‘chairman’. The Parish Council is not to be confused with the ecclesiastical parish council. The Parish Council has a number of ‘powers’, which give it freedom to choose what action to take but which must be distinguished from ‘duties’, which are much fewer.
Issues that may concern the Parish Council include Planning, Highways, Traffic, Community safety, Housing, Street Lighting, allotments, cemeteries, playing fields, community centres, war memorials, seats and shelters, rights of way. It can organise or give financial support to matters that will benefit community life.
There is a Parish Clerk appointed by the council who deals with the day-to-day matters. He, in conjunction with chairman prepares the agenda, takes the minutes at the monthly meeting, carries out any follow up work requested by the council, is the Responsible Finance Officer,
keeps the accounts and arranges the annual audit.
The Bloxham Conservation Area Appraisal November 2006 notes:
“The place name derives from the Anglo Saxon “Blocc’s Ham” (the home of Blocc) from the sixth century when a Saxon settlement was built on the banks of the Sor Brook tributary. In 1086 the village was recorded as Blochesham, in 1216 as Blokesham and only took its modern name of Bloxham in 1316. St Mary’s Church forms the centre of the village nucleus. The present building of the Church is mainly 14th & 15th century, but two doorways and fragments of a 12th century chapel have been incorporated. The East Window is by William Morris, and with its 190 foot spire Pevsner describes St Mary’s as ‘one of the grandest churches in the country’ (Pevsner & Sherwood 1974)”
